Lies

I had a job interview coming up, and my mom told me to tell them that I’d been taking care of my Gramma as the reason I haven’t worked in a year. I confronted her right away, saying, “So, lie?” Her face shifted instantly—she can’t stand any confrontation. It’s funny because my mom always preaches about honesty, even proudly displaying that “liar’s punishment” quote by Bernard Job on her fridge. But in reality, she’s constantly encouraging me to bend the truth—like stretching my story in a job interview or fudging details to qualify for EBT money. Yet when I got unemployment and rent credit during the pandemic, she was furious about it, accusing me of taking advantage. It’s this frustrating double standard that makes me question when honesty actually counts, especially considering she’s always attending AA meetings that preach rigorous honesty and accountability. It’s like she picks and chooses when the truth matters based on what’s convenient, leaving me confused about when it’s okay to lie—even when those mixed messages come from someone who claims honesty is the cornerstone of everything.
