Lips

Today I attended my sister's third birthday party, at the drag club called Lips. I was excited to go back after so long and was looking forward to a Sunday brunch with endless champagne. But when we arrived, it felt like something was off. The drag queen dressed as a nun seemed too jovial to be onstage. We stepped out for a smoke, and one of my sister's friends asked to bum a cigarette from me. We both watched the rain fall, knowing the coming hurricane meant safety was uncertain. She said odd things, and I didn't understand what she meant - until she told me that she was poly. When I went for another cigarette, she followed me outside again and tried to deny hitting on me before - but her actions seemed otherwise.I told her that I didn't think that, although my emotions were clouding my judgment. I had just gone through the death of my grandmother, and I was finding it hard to process.I started to cry, and then she wanted to give me a hug. We stood in embrace for almost a minute and a half until she said we needed to "breed" together - an unsettling moment that had me scrambling back inside. Tears of confusion traveled down my cheeks while no one asked what was wrong. The show went on as if everything was fine, but the following day when I confided in my sister's husband about the odd incident, he revealed that she had been hitting on her neighbor at her other birthday party the day before. Life can be so strange sometimes...
