Britney Bitch

Every year, my sister has this tradition of giving the women in her life a small, empowering gift to kick off the New Year—like her way of saying, “You made it through the chaos, and here’s a little something to celebrate your strength.” This year, though, she went with something that really threw me: a set of matches and a Britney Spears quote that said, “If standing up for yourself burns bridges, I have matches. We ride at dawn.” Like, okay, very dramatic, very Britney. But here’s the thing—this quote wasn’t just any quote. It’s one Britney posted on Instagram, and it’s  basically Britney’s mic drop on taking people down her family. That context really hit me because, honestly, it feels like I’m the one who’s supposed to be burning bridges. It feels like I’m the one who needs to call people out and let them know exactly how I feel. And yet, I don’t feel like anyone truly has my back in these situations—not even my sister, who seems to be all about family. It’s such a weird mix of emotions. Is she saying she gets it, or is it just a cool quote to her? Either way, it left me questioning where I stand and whether my voice is being heard.
