House of Velour

For the past few weeks, everything at La Jolla Playhouse  has revolved around The House of Velour, and I’ve become captivated by learning more  about Sasha Velour. What I’ve discovered is incredibly intriguing and resonates deeply with me. In Judaism, Velour's faith, the Talmud teaches that saving a single life is as if saving the entire world. Velour, in her own book and in line with Bakhtin’s philosophy, suggests that the true essence of a life is only fully understood after it ends. As she puts it, "The biggest reveal is death." When asked to elaborate, Velour explains, "I’ve always been drawn to the idea that our afterlife is defined by how our story is told and remembered. We give people an afterlife by recounting their stories and keeping their memory alive."
