Inheritance

The news hit me like a ton of bricks. My mom told me that there was no money left from my grandmother's estate, and I would not be receiving any inheritance. It didn't make sense. She had paid for my apartment, at $2600 a month for a year, but even if she had paid for the entire year, it still wouldn't explain where all the money went. My grandma had sold her house in New York for $250,000 and had only been in California for four years - how could she have spent it all? When my grandma's sister died, she left everything to my mother, and that's how we bought our house in San Luis Obispo. It just didn't add up.

As I thought about it more, a feeling of betrayal started to take hold. Was this my mom's doing? Had she taken more than her fair share of the inheritance money? Suddenly, memories flooded back of all our past fights and disagreements. Maybe this was just another way she wanted to hurt me.

But despite everything, I knew I can't accuse my own mother without evidence. So instead, I resolved to find out the truth myself. And once I did, there would be hell to pay.
