Let it Go!

Yesterday my sister asked me to put on “Let it Go” from Frozen. I was telling Ashlee that Elsa is probably the character I most identify with in all Disney films, and sometimes I believe my journey is much like hers. My sister chimed in as she was swimming......."Right, Let it Go!" For my sister the song “Let it go” means to stop thinking or being upset over something. She said the lyrics were deep. I said, in the movie Elsa sings "Let It Go" just moments after her dark secret has been discovered, forcing her into isolation. For Elsa, "Let It Go" is the moment she begins to stop holding herself to someone else's idea of perfect.

“Don't let them in, don't let them see

Be the good girl you always have to be

Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know”

I think about these lyrics almost daily…..after everyone was told I was a drug addict. For me the song is about being okay to be yourself, even when the world won’t accept you. In fact, it’s paramount, because if you repress yourself (conceal… don’t feel) you’ll explode, and end up making life much harder for yourself and for everybody else. You won’t be able to control your emotions or behavior until you accept who you are, and are comfortable with it. You shouldn’t have to fit yourself into a box of what is “perfect” or socially acceptable, because you’re never going to be perfect. It’s also okay to remove yourself from everyone else if you need to.

Ashlee agreed with me (whether really or not) she nodded "Yes", she said...."You are so right."

I mean, in the middle of the song, she sheds her cape, her gloves, and then her crown, each one symbolizing her imprisonment and responsibilities to being the Queen of Arendelle. “I’m free.”

This is a painting I did of me as Elsa while I was chiilin' in my Dad's garage.
